Twice a year, the historic city of Siena transforms into something unforgettable. Flags ripple from ancient windows, drummers echo through cobbled streets, and locals pour into the Piazza del Campo with centuries of pride in their hearts. This is the Palio di Siena — not just a horse race, but a fierce and beautiful celebration of Tuscan heritage, held since the 1600s. If you’re planning a summer escape to Italy, there is nothing quite like it.
The Heart of the Palio
At its core, the Palio is about community. Ten of Siena’s seventeen contrade (districts) are drawn to compete in a race that lasts just 90 seconds — but takes an entire year to prepare for. The riders race bareback at extraordinary speed around the curved piazza, cheered on by thousands. It’s loud, intense, and filled with emotion. If you’ve never seen an entire city hold its breath at once, this is your chance.
When to Visit
The Palio takes place twice:
-
2 July 2025 — the Palio di Provenzano
-
16 August 2025 — the Palio dell’Assunta
Each event is preceded by a week of festivities: think medieval processions, flag-throwing performances, and celebratory feasts hosted by each contrada. It’s the perfect blend of living history and Italian flair and celebrations.
What to Expect
Don’t expect a typical racecourse or grandstand seating. The Piazza del Campo is transformed into a dirt track, and spectators pack in wherever they can. But if you’d prefer a little more comfort — and let’s be honest, a glass of chilled white wine — we recommend booking a balcony seat at a palazzo overlooking the square. There are also VIP terraces available for an elevated experience (in every sense of the word).
Pair your day with a long, lazy lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant and take in the theatrical atmosphere of Siena dressed in its medieval finery.
